His Holiness Ramai Swami

His Holiness Ramai Swami is a senior spiritual leader of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), a member of the Governing Body Commission (GBC) since 1995, and an initiating spiritual master who has dedicated more than five decades to preaching, leadership, and organizational development within ISKCON.

Born in Alexandria, Egypt, and raised in Australia, Ramai Swami studied music at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT). While at university, he first encountered Krishna consciousness after reading a copy of Back to Godhead magazine belonging to a fellow student. Inspired by its spiritual message, he began regularly associating with ISKCON devotees and soon joined the movement as a full-time member. In 1973, he received spiritual initiation from His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda in Melbourne, Australia.

During his early years in ISKCON, Ramai Swami served in the Brisbane and Melbourne temples before joining traveling bus preaching programs that brought Krishna consciousness to cities and towns throughout Australia. In 1982, he accepted the renounced order of life (sannyāsa) in Śrīdhāma Māyāpur, India. Widely appreciated for his inspiring kīrtanas, thoughtful classes, and warm personal nature, he has made a lasting contribution to devotional life throughout Australasia.

Ramai Swami has served in numerous leadership roles within ISKCON. He was Vice Temple President in Auckland from 1974 to 1976, followed by appointments as Temple President in Adelaide, Melbourne, and the New Govardhana Farm Community between 1976 and 1986. He also served as Regional Secretary for Queensland from 1983 to 1986. After several more years of traveling preaching, he became Temple President in Sydney from 1990 to 1992 while simultaneously serving as National Secretary for Australia and New Zealand.

In 1995, Ramai Swami joined the Governing Body Commission. Over the years, he has overseen ISKCON’s development in Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Indonesia, and Śrīdhāma Māyāpur. He has also served on the GBC Organizational Development Committee and the Parallel Lines of Authority Committee, contributing to the strengthening of ISKCON’s governance and organizational effectiveness.

Ramai Swami has additionally served two terms on the GBC Executive Committee and has twice been elected Chairman of the Governing Body Commission, providing leadership to ISKCON’s highest governing body.

Through his lifelong commitment to preaching, devotional leadership, and organizational service, Ramai Swami continues to make significant contributions to the worldwide mission established by Śrīla Prabhupāda.
