His Holiness Guru Prasad Swami
His Holiness Guru Prasad Swami is a senior spiritual leader of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), a member of the Governing Body Commission (GBC) since 1987, and an initiating spiritual master dedicated to the development of ISKCON throughout Latin America and the Caribbean.
Born in the United States, Guru Prasad Swami initially studied Nuclear Physics at Purdue University. Later, seeking a deeper understanding of life’s purpose, he transferred to the University of Texas, where he first came into contact with the Hare Krishna movement. His interest in Krishna consciousness deepened during his military service in Panama, an experience that profoundly transformed the direction of his life.
After completing his military service, he joined a pioneering group of ISKCON devotees in San José, Costa Rica. In 1976, he attended the annual Mayapur–Vrindavan Festival, where he received spiritual initiation from His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda. In 1982, he accepted the renounced order of life (sannyāsa) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, becoming known as Guru Prasad Swami.
His early service to ISKCON focused on administrative leadership and the distribution of Bhaktivedanta Book Trust (BBT) publications. He distributed Śrīla Prabhupāda’s books in the United States beginning in 1975 and throughout Central America from 1976 to 1978. In 1978, he became the Temple President of the ISKCON center in Costa Rica and subsequently traveled extensively across Latin America, helping establish new temples, developing preaching centers, and supporting various administrative initiatives.
Since joining the Governing Body Commission in 1987, Guru Prasad Swami has provided leadership and oversight for numerous countries throughout the Americas. His responsibilities have included Arizona (USA) and Mexico, and he currently serves as Co-Zonal Secretary for El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Panama, Belize, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Colombia, Trinidad and Tobago, and Venezuela.
A central focus of Guru Prasad Swami’s service has been fostering effective communication and cooperation within ISKCON. He emphasizes the importance of clear, honest, and respectful communication as the foundation for harmonious relationships, effective leadership, and the healthy development of devotional communities.
Through decades of preaching, leadership, and pastoral care, Guru Prasad Swami has made significant contributions to the growth and stability of ISKCON throughout Latin America and continues to inspire devotees through his dedication to Śrīla Prabhupāda’s mission.
