His Holiness Bhakti Caitanya Swami
His Holiness Bhakti Caitanya Swami is a senior spiritual leader of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), a member of the Governing Body Commission (GBC) since 1998, and an initiating spiritual master with disciples throughout the world.
Originally from New Zealand, he first encountered Krishna consciousness while studying philosophy at the University of Auckland. In 1972, he saw His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda visiting the university campus, an experience that inspired him to join the Hare Krishna movement in London in early 1973. Later that year, he received spiritual initiation from Śrīla Prabhupāda, who gave him the name Raghubīra Dāsa. In 1984, during the annual Gaura Purnima festival in Mayapur, he accepted the renounced order of life (sannyāsa) and became known as Bhakti Caitanya Swami.
During his early years in ISKCON, he served with the Bhaktivedanta Book Trust (BBT) and actively distributed Śrīla Prabhupāda’s books from 1973 to 1980. He then moved to South Africa, where he served as Temple President of the Cato Ridge community from 1980 to 1982. He subsequently helped raise funds for the construction of the Temple of Understanding in Durban, which opened in 1985 and has become one of South Africa’s most recognized landmarks, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors annually.
From 1985 to 1988, Bhakti Caitanya Swami served as ISKCON’s Regional Secretary for South Africa. Between 1988 and 1991, he participated in an outreach and preaching project in Johannesburg. Since then, he has dedicated himself primarily to international preaching, traveling extensively to teach Krishna consciousness through lectures, seminars, festivals, and pilgrimages. His permanent base remains Durban, South Africa.
As a member of the Governing Body Commission, Bhakti Caitanya Swami has overseen and supported ISKCON’s development in numerous countries, including Angola, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Eswatini, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Estonia, Mauritius, Latvia, Lithuania, Northwest Russia, Eastern Siberia, Western Siberia, and South Africa. He served as Vice-Chairman of the GBC from 2001 to 2003 and again from 2010 to 2011, and as Chairman of the GBC during 2002–2003. He has also contributed to ISKCON’s long-term development through his participation in strategic planning and organizational development initiatives.
Bhakti Caitanya Swami has a longstanding interest in photography, filmmaking, and parikramā (pilgrimage to sacred places). These interests have resulted in numerous documentary films featuring India’s holy places and major ISKCON festivals, as well as several published books, including Vrindavan: The Playground of God and the three-volume series Traveling in the Service of Srila Prabhupada.
Through more than five decades of devotional service, Bhakti Caitanya Swami has become widely respected for his thoughtful presentations of Vedic philosophy, compassionate leadership, and dedicated service to Śrīla Prabhupāda’s mission worldwide.
